Bian Que Resuscitating the Dead
Bian Que was a practitioner in the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.).  As an experienced practitioner, he was famous for his diagnostic skill in pulse taking and prescribing formulas.  He did well in non-medication therapy like acupuncture, moxibustion, tuina, etc.  He was such an excellent practitioner that he was respectfully referred to as “the Father of Chinese Medicine”.
Qi Si Hui Sheng (Resuscitating the Dead) is a fixed phrase and often used to describe the brilliant clinical skill of physicians.  The story behind this phrase is as follows:

Once Bian Que passed the Guo State and heard that the crown prince just died.

He went to the palace and knew that the prince passed away in sudden syncope several hours before.  He told the emperor's retinue that he wanted to see the emperor immediately: “I heard your crown prince just died, but I can make him come back to life”.People around were puzzled and said : “Are you kidding?  How can you say you can save the dead crown prince?”

Bian Que said: "If you don't believe, you can examine him.  You can hear sound in his ears.  You can see his nose flaring.  You can feel slight warmth along the internal side of the thigh to the private parts."

The emperor's retinue was astonished after hearing Bian Que's words. Then he reported it to the emperor. The emperor was much astonished and went out to meet Bian Que in a hurry. Bian Que said: “The crown prince is just in a corpse-like syncope.  In fact he isn’t dead at all.”

Meanwhile, Bian Que ordered his pupils to grind a needle (made of stone at that time) for him and he punctured Baihui (GV 20).  After a while, the prince came back to life.  Hot medicinal compress was used on the hypochondriac regions and herbal decoctions were prescribed for about twenty days.

The prince was fully recovered.  Since then Bian Que was more famous for this treatment.  Bian Que said: “I am not being able to save the dead.  The crown prince wasn't dead.  What I could do is to cure him.”
