Definition and Types of Chinese Medicinal Substances

- Chinese medicinal substances are those which are gathered, processed and produced under the guidance of the theory of traditional Chinese medicine for clinical use with explicit mechanism. Based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese medicinal substances are characterized by their unique theoretical system and applications, so they are different from conventional medicines.
- Chinese medicinal substances come from natural medicinal substances and their preparations, including plant, animal and mineral ones. According to an incomplete survey, there are over 12000 kinds of them, of which over 11000 are of the plant origin, over 1100 are of the animal origin and over 80 are of mineral origin. They are usually called “materia medica”, as the majority of them are of the plant origin.
