Combinations of Chinese Medicinal Substances
The art of combination of Chinese medicinal substances is the selection of two or more substances for clinical purposes according to the disease condition and herbal properties. Combination of medicinal substances can help increase therapeutic effects and minimize toxicity or side effect, thus directly aims at relief of the condition.
There are seven types of herbal combination, differentiated by their effect, i.e. single effect, mutual accentuation, mutual enhancement, mutual counteraction, mutual suppression, mutual antagonism and mutual incompatibility. Except the single effect, the others are of the techniques for combining herbs.

It means the use of one substance.
 
Mutual accentuation:
 

 

 

It means the combination of two substances with similar action to accentuate their therapeutic effect. One example is, the combination of Gypsum Fibrosum and Rhizoma Anemarrhenae to greatly clear heat and purge fire.
Mutual enhancement:
 

 

 

It means the combination of two substances with similar property and action, in which one substance enhance the effect of the other.  The example is Poria in combination with Radix Astragali as the former can enhance the latter’s action—tonifying qi qnd increasing urine secretion.
