Qi, Blood, Body Fluid, Essence, Spirit and vitality

Western Medicine emphasizes the physical structures of the human body and believes that it is composed of varied organic and inorganic substances, which form proteins, cells, tissues, organs, physiological systems and the whole body.

The ancient Chinese believed that qi was the basic substance, which constituted the world and everything in the universe was the result of qi movement.
Qi has the properties of powerful vigor and constant movement throughout the body to maintain life activities.
Qi of the human body derives from integration of three aspects, i.e. the prenatal qi inherited from parents, nutrients from essence of foodstuffand fresh air inhaled from the external environment.  Different from its function, qi is classified into the original qi, pectoral qi, nutritive qi and defensive qi.
Qi gives impetus to the growth and physiological activities of the human body, promoting the generation of blood and body fluids, propelling them running through the body, and protecting the body against pathogenic factors.  By qi activity, essence, qi, blood and body fluids can be mutually transformed.
There is no concept of cells in Traditional Chinese medicine, which believes that such essential substances as qi, blood, and body fluid make up a human body and keep it alive by interacting with its individual part.
