Yin and Yang

Yin-Yang Theory

Yin and yang exist in daily life.  Yin refers to the dark side of the mountain, and yang the bright side of the mountain.  Yin and yang can also be extended to describe other phenomena that can be divided into the aspects of yin and yang, such as the heaven and earth, day and night, water and fire, and male and female, etc.  According to this concept, ancient Chinese began to understand that everything contained two aspects—yin and yang.  The two aspects are opposite to each other yet interdependent on each other.  Generally speaking, things that bear the properties of being active, rising, bright, warm and light pertain to yang; while things that bear the properties of being static, descending, dim, cold and heavy pertain to yin.  Any aspect of yin and yang in an object can be further and infinitely divided.
Normally, yin and yang remain a balanced state with the two sides waning and waxing to a certain range.  That means in the interaction between yin and yang, one side is developing while the other side is declining.  This theory is well signified by the changes of the four seasons. From spring to summer, yang waxes while yin wanes; the weather becomes hot.  And from autumn to winter, yin waxes while yang wanes; the weather then becomes cold.  In a year, the predominant time of yin and yang or cold and heat is almost the same, thus, yin and yang balance each other.
If yin or yang wanes or waxes to the extreme point, it will turn to the opposite.  That is to say yang will change into yin and yin into yang.  Let’s again take weather for example.  From winter till spring and summer, the weather turns gradually from cold to warm and hot.  It is a process known as “wane of yin and wax of yang”.  On the contrary, from summer till autumn and winter, it turns from hot to cool and cold.  It is a process known as “wane of yang and wax of yin”.
