Yin-Yang and the Human Body

Yin-Yang Theory

Tradition Chinese medicine believes that the human body is an organic whole and can be explained according to the theory of yin and yang.  Generally speaking, the upper part of the body pertains to yang while the lower part to yin; the exterior pertains to yang while the interior to yin; the back pertains to yang while the chest and the abdomen to yin; the lateral side of the four limbs pertain to yang while the medial side to yin.  As to the viscera, the five zang organs storing essence pertains to yin while the six fu organs transporting and transforming food and water pertain to yang.  Each organ itself can be further divided into the yin and yang aspects, such as heart yin and heart yang, liver yin and liver yang, kidney yin and kidney yang, etc.  And as to the substances that make up the body, qi, invisible and active, pertains to yang, while blood and body fluids, concrete and static, pertain to yin.
