Frequently Used Moxibustion Techniques

Direct Moxibustion with Moxa Cones

A moxa cone is placed directly on the skin and ignited.  This method is applicable to asthma, chronic gastroenteritis, development disorders and debilitated patients.

Indirect Moxibustion with Moxa Cones

It is performed by placing some medicinal substances between the moxa cone and skin.  There are several kinds of indirect moxibustion as the substance insulating the cone and the skin is different.
 (1) Ginger-Partition Moxibustion: This type of moxibustion is commonly used and usually does not scald the patients.  Ginger, which has an pungent taste and a warm nature, can release the exterior, disperse cold, warm the middle and stop vomiting, often used to treat the exterior syndrome and diseases due to deficiency and cold, such as common cold, cough, arthralgia due to wind-dampness, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc.
 (2) Garlic-Partition Moxibustion: Attention should be paid as the garlic juice is irritant to skin, which may bring about pustules on moxibustion.  Garlic, pungent in taste and warm in nature, relieves toxicity, invigorates the stomach function and kills parasites, usually used for pulmonary tuberculosis, abdominal masses, unruptured carbuncles.
(3) Salt-Partition Moxibustion: It is applied only to the umbilicus, used for acute abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, dysentery, cold limbs and restoring yang from collapse.
 (4) Monkshood (Radix Aconiti Laterails Preparata) Cake-Partition Moxibustion: pungent in taste and extremely hot in nature, monkshood acts to warm the kidney and activate yang, usually used for cases with yang deficiency, e.g. impotence, premature ejaculation, unhealed wounds and fistula, or other exterior-deficiency syndrome of yin type.  A piece of gauze should be put between the herbal cake and skin to avoid scald.  The herbal cake is reusable.

Moxibustion with Moxa Sticks

Apply a lighted moxa stick over the selected part of the body from some distance.  Moxibustion lasts for 10~20min to cause a mild warmth to the local area until it becomes hot and pink, but without scorching.  The moxa-stick moxibustion is classified into three types: mild-warm moxibustion, sparrow-pecking moxibustion and circling moxibustion.

Moxa Stick with Other Medicinal Substances

It is a moxa stick mixed with other herbal powders.  Clinically, it is called Taiyi moxa-cigar, which is used to treat arthralgia due to wind-cold-dampness, stubborn numbness, flaccidity and hemiplegia.  The thunder-fire miraculous needle is a type of moxa roll, whose preparation and manipulation are similar to the Taiyi moxa-cigar.  The only difference is that it is mixed with different herbal ingredients.

Moxibustion with Warming Needles

It is a combination of acupuncture and moxibustion, indicated for the cases that need retention of needles and moxibustion.
