Scientific Achievements of Traditional Chinese Medicine
The scientific achievements of traditional Chinese medicine at different levels obtained in Beijing make it one of the top in the country. According to preliminary statistics, from 1978 to 2002 about 320 research projects were completed by 20 institutions, including the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Beijing Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Beijing Ji Shui Tan Hospital, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Beijing Medical University, Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Sino-Japan Friendship Hospital (supervised by the Health Ministry). These institutions won awards amounting to 23.1% of the total awards granted by all provincial and ministerial authorities.
Authorized Projects of Traditional Chinese Medcine in Beijing
The authorized projects of traditional Chinese medicine in Beijing are also in the position ahead of others. According to preliminary statistics, from 1986 to 2002 there were 1,147 projects, among which 247 projects of Beijing were supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, amounting to 21.52% of the total. The research fields included theoretical study, acupuncture and meridians, herbal formulas, medical history and literature, ethnic medicine, animal models, scientific methods exploration and so on. There were 364 authorized projects of Beijing financially supported by the Health Ministry and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, accounting to 23.85% of the total.
The authorized projects and scientific achievements of Beijing include the study of artemisinin and research on medicinals for promotion of blood circulation to remove stagnation. These have been regarded as landmarks in the scientific development of traditional Chinese medicine.
